When we speak about journals in the sciences, what is the effect of research funding from the United States in encouraging publication in English? See, for example, the "State of the world's science" in the September 2012 Scientific American.
When I began in 1974 as a first-year chemistry major, the major required a minor in German. The argument might have been dated by that time, but it was that German was the language of science journals, particularly those in chemistry.
My questions are how have these requirements changed over time, and what do those changes say about the future of current requirements to publish in English?
