What I find particularly interesting in this paper:
I love Jeanne's very clear-sighted description and understanding of the branding associated with writing programs and how they function. Her vision--stark and honest—reveals for us some of the important challenges posed by the economic systems in which both writing programs and institutions of higher education play key roles.
A response and some challenges:
The "grimness" remarked on here represets, as Karen K.. says a cultural/community critique that we can't do without, that we can't fail to mark. For me, the emotion/affect stirred up by Jeanne's vision is indicative of the depth/extent/dimension of the problems that composition is facing, and the importance of digging in intellectually.
